1.13c runewords problems

Hi there,

I run DII 1.13c on my PC (upgraded to 1.13c via batttlenet automatically after installing the game); no mods.

I can't get runewords to work - tried rhyme, smoke, stealth - not working - all i get is just the stats from the runes themselves

my amazon is now clvl 46 about to finish nightmare and i don't feel like starting over...

any help or ideas please

it has been a few years now since I last played and I just realized it must be the grey text item i want to socket and i have been trying to socket a blue text one...
